HMS Ark Royal (pennant number 91) was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that served during the Second World War.

Designed in 1934 to fit the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird and Company, Ltd. at Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938. Her design differed from previous aircraft carriers. Ark Royal was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, instead of an add-on or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, she had two hangar deck levels. She served during a period that first saw the extensive use of naval air power; a number of carrier tactics were developed and refined aboard Ark Royal.

Ark Royal served in some of the most active naval theatres of the Second World War. She was involved in the first aerial and U-boat kills of the war, operations off Norway, the search for the German battleship Bismarck, and the Malta Convoys. Ark Royal survived several near misses and gained a reputation as a ‘lucky ship’. The Germans incorrectly reported her as sunk on multiple occasions.

She was torpedoed on 13 November 1941 by the German submarine U-81 and sank the following day. Her sinking was the subject of several inquiries; investigators were keen to know how the carrier was lost, in spite of efforts to save the ship and tow her to the naval base at Gibraltar. They found that several design flaws contributed to the loss, which were rectified in new British carriers.

La quille fut posée pour cette unité en septembre 1935, le lancement eut lieu en avril 1937, et l’entrée en service dans la Royal Navy – en décembre 1938. La longueur totale du navire au moment du lancement était de 240 m, la largeur hors tout était d’environ 29 m, avec un tirant d’eau de 9,6 mètres. Le déplacement complet, en revanche, était d’environ 28 200 tonnes et la vitesse maximale atteignait 30 nœuds. Le porte-avions a pu embarquer jusqu’à 72 avions, mais a en fait exploité 50 à 60 avions. L’armement secondaire comprenait, entre autres : 16 canons de calibre 114 mm ou 32 canons de calibre 40 mm (appelés pom-pom).

Le HMS Ark Royal (91) a été construit au chantier naval Cammell Laird and Company à Birkenhead, sur la base d’une conception développée en 1934 et tenant compte des limites du traité de Washington. Le navire présenté était sans aucun doute une nouveauté dans la Royal Navy à plusieurs niveaux. Tout d’abord, c’était le premier porte-avions britannique dont le poste de pilotage faisait partie intégrante de l’ensemble du navire. Dès le début, l’unité a également été conçue pour transporter autant d’avions que possible, ce qui a également été largement couronné de succès. En revanche, il était inférieur dans ce domaine aux unités japonaises Akagi ou Kaga, par exemple. Dès le début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le HMS Ark Royal (91) fut largement utilisé par la Royal Navy et participa à un grand nombre d’opérations navales dès le début de ce conflit militaire. Tout d’abord, il participe activement à l’opération en Norvège en avril-juin 1940, mais aussi à l’opération Catapult (1940) en Méditerranée. Le HMS Ark Royal (91) a également participé de manière limitée à la bataille du cap Spartivento (novembre 1940). De fin 1940 à fin 1941, le porte-avions opère dans le bassin méditerranéen et couvre le plus souvent des convois britanniques à destination de Malte. L’unité a été coulée lors d’une attaque à la torpille par le U-81 le 14 novembre 1941, près de la base de Gibraltar. Soit dit en passant, on peut ajouter que le commandant de l’unité a été accusé d’avoir négligé ses devoirs après ce fait et il a été traduit devant un tribunal militaire.
